There are many ways voting is inaccessible to people of all backgrounds and abilities.
We’ve recently reported on some. But the city and some advocacy groups are working to make sure a lack of transportation is not one of them. Here are some you can check out:
- The Detroit Department of Transportation: Free rides all day on Election Day for both regular and fixed-route trips, as well as “eligible paratransit riders.” The fares are free all day and are not limited to polling locations, or to people who have already voted.
- Eligible paratransit riders should follow the regular advance reservation procedures. You can call 313-774-5555 or visit Detroit Paratransit.
- The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART): Rides will be free for folks in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties all day on Nov. 3. For more information, about schedules and bus stop locations, visit smartbus.org or call 866-962-5515.
- Detroit Bus Company: Rides are available on Election Day (Nov. 3) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Request a ride by calling (313) 444-2871 and signing up by Nov. 2.
- Warriors on Wheels of Metro Detroit: Rides — which are wheelchair accessible — are available for seniors and people with disabilities on Election Day from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Request a ride by calling 313-251-5777 or filling out this form.
- Detroit Downriver APRI: Volunteers will be using their own cars to offer rides from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. They may even be able to offer accessible/assisted rides for wheelchair users. Register here: https://www.apridetroitdownriver.org/ridetothepolls.
