FUN FACT: At Dearborn’s gourmet Mexican street food eatery M Cantina, you can add toasted grasshoppers, ants, stinkbugs and other insects to your food.
Hey, it’s JB!
This week I have a feature on the Clique, a beloved diner called one of the last of its kind in Detroit. Attached to the front of a motel with a glass-paned roof, the spot on Jefferson has been enjoyed by generations since it opened in 1968.

National food influencer Mr. Chimetime said “it’s very hard to find good breakfast in Detroit” in a video about must-try restaurants in Detroit.
Detroit could use more quality brunch places but I disagree with Mr. Chimetime.
Besides the Clique, you can get James Beard award-winning pastries and quiche at Warda, Mexican breakfast at Jordan’s Family Restaurant, elaborate bagel sandwiches at James Oliver Coffee Co., food made with local ingredients at Folk, and a ginormous ham sandwich at Mike’s Famous Ham Place, which just made the New York Times best dishes of 2024 list. And it’s not Detroit, but I have to shout out James Beard semifinalist AlTayeb in Dearborn; every single thing is good there.

Detroit also has an abundance of Coney Island restaurants and an ever expanding scene of brunch pop-ups, like Egg Hunt, Fried Chicken and Caviar, and Homegirl Kitchen.
Do you have any memorable moments at the Clique? What’s your favorite brunch spot and what’s your order? Send me an email at jbrooker@bridgedetroit.com!
