FUN FACT: A 240 lb lake sturgeon caught in the Detroit River in 2021 was estimated to be more than 100 years old.
Hey, it’s JB!
Every year 22 million pounds of plastic enters the Great Lakes where it breaks down into microplastics and ends up in the fish on your dinner plate and even in your beer.
Over the weekend I visited the studio of a local artist, Hannah Tizedes, who has collected 100,000 pieces of plastic from the Great Lakes over the last few years. She uses her finds to make art and educate people about the huge plastic problem in our state.

Did you know that since 2016 Michigan has had a ban on banning plastic? And that plastic, in all practicality, isn’t really recyclable, but plastic producers lied about it for the last several decades?
To address the issue locally, Michigan Democrats are trying to reverse the ban. If repealed, local governments in the state could ban plastic bags and similar single-use utensils, cutting down on plastic waste.
This week I met two other Detroit artists also using trash–mostly plastic–to make art. I’m really honored they all shared their craft with me. Check out the story.
Dig In,
JB
