FUN FACT: The owner of the Yemeni coffee shop, Haraz Coffee House, received more than 1,500 applications for franchise locations in a year.

Hey, it’s JB!

Last week, I was walking to the tacos Árabes pop-up at Saffron De Twah when a friend showed me an Instagram post about a mysterious new pop-up in Dearborn called Whisper, special for Ramadan.

That began a conversation about how my Muslim friend felt like there were more late-night options now than they had growing up during Ramadan, the holy month when Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from before sunrise to sunset, pray at the mosque and give to charity.

Intrigued by this new spot, I headed to Dearborn at 10:30 p.m. to check it out and a few other spots across the city during Ramadan where you can find coffee and tea, sandwiches, breakfast, shawarma, and more, late into the night, with some spots open until 5 a.m.

At Whisper, I ran into Bilal Hammoud, executive director of the American Arab Chamber of Commerce. He said the number of late night food options during Ramadan has grown “exponentially” over the last decade. And there’s clearly demand–the coffee house I went to didn’t have a single seat available at midnight on a Thursday.
