Are you a SNAP recipient? If so, did you know that for every $1 you spend on fruits and vegetables it can be matched for free for up to $20 per day?
Last year, Detroiters redeemed more than $1 million in fresh produce through the Double Up Food Bucks program and more than a third (37%) of Detroit households use SNAP, according to the Detroit Food Policy Council.
Across the state, more than 230 locations offer the program. In Detroit, there are 31 participating locations including: E & L Supermercado, the Detroit People’s Food Co-op, Imperial Fresh, and Eastern Market. In addition to increasing healthy food access, the program helps local farmers. Since the program’s start in 2009, 45 million pounds of produce have been purchased at Michigan Double Up locations, supporting an estimated 800 local farmers, according to nonprofit Fair Food Network. One dollar spent at a farmers market generates an estimated $1.70 for the local economy, while every dollar spent at a local grocery store can generate $1.40.
