Hey, it’s JB!

Just in the last week we’ve seen several unique cafes open: Kitab opened a cafe and grocery store in Corktown, JP Makes and Bakes opened a Filipino cafe and bakery in New Center, and Sepia Coffee opened a Black-owned coffee shop and roastery in the North End.

Simultaneously, several coffee shops have closed in recent months, like The Gathering Co., Fourteen East Cafe, and the Detroit Institute of Bagels. As of October of this year, 16 coffee shops have closed in the city while 24 have opened, according to cartographer Alex Hill maps and tracks Detroit’s coffee shops

The seesaw effect in Detroit’s coffee scene has been sort of normal in recent years. In fact, out of the 104 coffee shops in Detroit today, just 17 have been around for 10 years or more, according to Hill’s tracking.

But the fact that the three coffee shops that opened this week are all doing something unique in addition to serving coffee – hopefully they’ll stick around.
