Hey, it’s JB!

Lots of food news this week.

Detroit’s National Urban Agriculture Conference: Hundreds of farmers, United States Department of Agriculture officials and policymakers convened in Detroit last week for the first conference to bridge the gap between urban farmers and the USDA, but the connection locally has faltered. A day after the conference the director of Detroit’s USDA office quit saying the office, actually located in Ann Arbor, didn’t meet his expectations. Read the story.

Dollar stores are cleaning up: Detroit City Council Member Angela Whitfield-Calloway was instrumental in the transformation of a dollar store on Eight Mile and Schaeffer with dozens of blight tickets. The improvements are part of a larger initiative from the councilwoman which comes after a BridgeDetroit investigation into Dollar Tree and Family Dollar blight in Detroit. Read the story.

Collaborative cookbook: If you’ve been reading JB’s Bites for awhile then you know about Detroit architect Shuba Shekar who has been creating a collaborative cookbook made of recipes from the community. The book is finally here and this week a beautiful publishing party was held in Detroit where book contributors brought the dish they submitted! To purchase a book, check out the Instagram page.

Collard green cookoff: The annual collard green cook off is tonight! I hope to see you there! Read the story and see event details.

Dig In,
JB
