Detroiters will have monthly access to a new food pantry in the city starting next month.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that it is moving its Wayne County On-the-Go pop-up food distribution site to the MDHHS office on Conner Street in Detroit.
The food pantries are hosted in partnership with Forgotten Harvest. The mobile food pantry collaboration has helped more than 1,6000 families, Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director, said in a statement.
On-the-Go pantries allow individuals to schedule appointments and select groceries from fresh produce to grains to proteins. Culturally appropriate food options – such as halal and kosher-friendly items – are offered when available to communities with dietary needs.
MDHHS plans to offer the mobile food pantries monthly at select MDHHS offices in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. The events have distributed nearly 42 tons of groceries to-date.
