A voter-approved task force is studying generational harms caused to Black Detroiters to inform reparative policy recommendations for the city.
The BridgeDetroit newsroom is partnering with Detroit PBS’ American Black Journal on a June 26 town hall on where the process stands and research being conducted by the University of Michigan to aid the task force in fulfilling its mission.
The virtual noon event, “Making Amends: The Quest for Reparations,” moderated by American Black Journal Host Stephen Henderson, will feature panel talks with task force co-chairs Keith Williams and Cidney Calloway and with Rita Chin, associate dean for the University of Michigan’s Rackham Graduate School. U-M researchers partnered with the task force last year to study the role of city government in perpetuating and enforcing discrimination. Chin will discuss the university’s work so far, which aims to sharpen recommendations for policies dealing with wealth gaps, homeownership, environmental and educational harms and police misconduct.
BridgeDetroit reporter Malachi Barrett also will join the conversation to discuss his three-part series on reparations and insights from his in-depth reporting on Detroit’s quest for reparations.
The town hall will be available on the American Black Journal Facebook page and website as well as the Detroit PBS YouTube channel.
