FUN FACT: Kar’s Nuts, a trail mix brand founded in Detroit, got its start selling outside of the Tigers Stadium in 1933.

Hey, it’s JB!

Vámonos near Clark Park has become an important “third place” for the Southwest Detroit community.

Mexico City native Denisse Lopez-Avila opened the eatery in 2023 to fill a gap by providing healthy food options like smoothies, protein-filled sandwiches, salads, and wraps made with local ingredients. It also has a packed calendar with Zumba, cardio drumming and dance classes and community meet-ups.

Born-and-raised Southwest Detroiter Juanita Zuniga has the story on how the spot became a neighborhood hub in an article for El Central, Michigan’s only bilingual newspaper. Read the story here

Tonight, Vámonos is having a zine-making session, dinner and discussion about food sovereignty with Detroit’s Fennigan Farms from 5-8 p.m.

Dig In,
JB

Bonus: I stopped in Vámonos a few weeks ago to catch up with a source and ended up noticing that Lopez-Avila has a Detroit skyline tattoo on her forearm. She kindly talked with me about it and gave her thoughts on the potential demolition of the RenCen. Read here.
