Hey, it’s JB!

Have you been to every restaurant in Detroit, or feel like you have?

Put it to the test with “The Checklist!”

It’s a paper list of more than 900 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops in all corners of the city separated by geographic location that allows you to track how many restaurants you’ve been to. Since 2005, Jeanette Pierce, founder of City Institute, has crafted the list and now, in sponsorship with the Bank of America, prints thousands of copies to distribute at locations around the city. The list is also available to print online

On June 14, the latest version will be released.

The Checklist got started as a way to share information about small businesses before the creation of Instagram, and when Facebook was just getting started. Now, it’s a fun throwback to sit down at the table with a printout of the list, start checking them off, and see how far you get.

I grabbed a copy from Pierce the other day and went through it–I was surprised when I got to the end and noticed I haven’t tried most restaurants in northeast Detroit, so for the next few months my goal is to eat out more there. What’s your favorite restaurant in northeast Detroit?

My grand total was 210 out of 918 restaurants. If you fill out the list I want to know what your total is! Let me know by emailing jbrooker@bridgedetroit.com or clicking the button at the bottom of the newsletter.

Seasons Market has a lot of great food from local producers. On my latest trip I noticed it’s carrying Baobab Fare’s newer dessert, which is amazing! It’s like a chocolate mousse and comes with spiced nuts that have a bit of a kick, and it’s vegan. Credit: Madison Prinzing
