FUN FACT: With more than 300 farmers markets, Michigan is often ranked as having some of the most in the country.
Hey, it’s JB!
The longest day of the year is upon us! Tomorrow the sun will reach its highest point in the sky, marking the summer solstice. Several Detroit farms are hosting events in celebration.
Tonight, you can attend a special dinner at Coriander Kitchen & Farm. On Friday, if you’re on the east side, check out the Sanctuary Farms’ block party featuring a live DJ, food trucks, artisan market and produce vendors. The west side night market at Beaverland Farms is hosting a similar party. Wrap up your solstice summer weekend on Sunday at Fennigan’s Farms with a natural dye workshop.
I first heard about solstice parties when I was working on a farm several years ago and since then have been excited about the idea of celebrating.
This past winter solstice I was in Mexico and traveled to the ancient city of Teotihuacan, the largest city of the ancient Americas. The city is characterized by the massive Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, and the Feathered Serpent Pyramid. Every year, thousands of people go to the pyramids to take part in rituals for celestial events, like the solstice.
It was definitely cool, but I didn’t know anyone. I look forward to celebrating this year’s solstice in good company, in Detroit!
