FUN FACT: Around 70% of potatoes grown in Michigan become potato chips, filling 1 in 4 chip bags nationally.

Hey, it’s JB!

It’s finally time for planting and gardening!

If you don’t know about Keep Growing Detroit, it’s a 1.38-acre farm located in Eastern Market by the Dequindre Cut and they have just the program to help get your garden started.

There’s a lot of amazing things to say about the nonprofit, but I want to highlight the Garden Resource Program. For just $15 per year your household can become a member and, in exchange, receive seeds, transplants, access to gardening workshops and supplies, soil testing and more. The first seed and plant pick-up is April 22 so sign up in advance or you’ll have to wait until mid-May.

To me, the classes are one of the coolest things about the program. They focus on growing strawberries, making traditional maple sugar, composting, mushroom cultivation, and more. All for *$15*?!

If you’re not planting your own garden this year, but plan to join a community garden, I wish you better luck than me – it took me two years to get off a waiting list at one community garden for Midtown residents. Then again, I’ve never lived in Midtown, so I guess I wasn’t getting the plot anyway.

In my grandparents’ garden. Every year my 90-year-old grandpa plants more and more kale for me despite my assurance one plant is plenty. He planted 40 kale plants last year. We’ll see how many it is this year!
