Hey, it’s JB!

I have great news for you this week.

The city is bringing back a program aimed at increasing access to fresh food for Detroiters, 65% of whom struggle to consistently access healthy and affordable groceries.

The Green Grocer Project will provide grants of up to $25,000 for at least eight small grocery stores and loans to four grocery stores. Between 2017 and 2022, Detroit lost 10 full-line grocery stores, leaving 64.

The Detroit Food Policy Council recommends having 30,000 square feet of grocery available for every 10,000 people. Detroit is 90% of the way to the goal.

This iteration of the Green Grocer Project will focus more on supporting walkable, neighborhood grocery shopping options versus larger grocers. Check out the story below.

And, speaking of local grocery stores, a reminder that the Detroit People’s Food Co-op hiring fair is today from 2-7 p.m. at the Considine Recreation Center, 8904 Woodward Ave.

Dig In,
JB
