Hey, it’s JB!

You’ve probably visited a local restaurant or cafe in Detroit that uses compostable food packaging. When you were done, you probably threw it in the trash.

Hundreds of eateries in the metro Detroit area use compostable food products to be more environmentally friendly and eliminate plastic waste, but these items often meet the same fate as their plastic counterparts – a landfill where the waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

The items need to be composted in a specialized industrial process, which many people aren’t aware of. Others who are aware say it’s too complicated or costly to properly dispose of the items without a city-supported composting program and regulations that support industrial composting.

Right now, compostable food packaging is somewhat of a hoax, but if disposed of properly, it could create a nutrient-rich soil additive while reducing plastic waste and methane emissions.
