FUN FACT: Detroit’s Fisheye Farms has a steamer that sterilizes the soil to around 160°F, killing off weed seeds and helping prevent soil disease.

Hey, it’s JB!

This week I went to the state’s MI Healthy Climate two-day conference held at Huntington Place. More than 1,000 people attended the third year of the conference which meant that I ran into tons of Detroit climate and environmental leaders.

One interesting piece of news that I picked up – a new grassroots group called the Detroit Community Compost Collection Project is launching a pilot this year for 200 participants.

DCCCP is composed of Sanctuary Farms, Detroit Black Food Sovereignty Network, Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund (DBFLF), Detroit Food Policy Council, Sacred Spaces, Oakland Avenue Urban Farm and supported by Industrious Labs.

I have all the details in the story linked below and details on more than $1 million the state granted Wednesday to compost and food waste reduction programs in Detroit.
