Hey, it’s JB!

This week, I have good news about Maty’s African Cuisine, an underrated Senegalese restaurant on Detroit’s northwest side.

Maty’s opened in 2017 and sells whole grilled red snapper, lamb shank, deep-fried fataya, and sides like fried plantain and yellow rice.

Restaurant owner Amady Gueye applied several years ago to purchase an adjacent city-owned building to expand the restaurant’s size and menu, but was in a waiting game until earlier this month when the City Council approved the sale. Now, Gueye plans to add African desserts to the menu and other tasty items and double the size of his dining room!

I say Maty’s is underrated because, as I was reporting the story, many people told me they had never heard of it and/or hadn’t been in for years. It’s further out from the downtown core, but the food is phenomenal.

Check out the full story and if you go, let me know what you think.

JB

Last week I asked what item you throw away the most and you said “fruit” and “salad.” My No. 1 tip to avoid throwing away fruit would be to freeze it and use it later for smoothies, jam, bread, etc. I use frozen fruit (like these Michigan cherries) to make popsicles. As for salad, buy smaller bags or revive it by soaking in a bowl of cold water. I’ve also heard you can blend it into a dressing.
