Hey, it’s JB!
Bad news this week for all bagel lovers– the Detroit Institute of Bagels is closed indefinitely.
On July 14, owner Ben Newman told staff by email that he had sold the business to Philip Kafka, a local real estate developer and owner of Cafe Prince, home to the $1.80 raw carrot.
Within the week, citing a rocky transition of ownership and disagreements with Kafka’s business and political views, a handful of staff submitted resignation letters.

With “key” staff departures, Kafka was unable to keep operating the restaurant, he told staff by email, informing them that as a result the remaining workers no longer had employment.
Future plans for the business are still being worked out. I will keep you updated!
Dig In,
JB
