Manoomin harvest. Credit: Antonio Cosme

Hey, it’s JB!

This Sunday a wild rice, or manoomin, camp is being held at Historic Fort Wayne to reconnect city Natives to the traditional ways of harvesting and processing wild rice, a grain that once grew abundantly in Detroit.

Manoomin is sacred for Great Lakes tribes who, when migrating from the East, were told to establish where food grew on the water and found wild rice in the Great Lakes, according to oral tradition. But the rice was largely destroyed due to development, industrial agriculture, mining, and, more recently, climate change. As a result, Natives in Detroit often have to travel several hours to learn the ways of traditional wild rice harvesting and processing.

The workshop aims to bring the rice to Detroit, making the traditions more accessible to urban Natives.

Speaking of watermelons, I was just picking up watermelons at my old stomping grounds, the University of Michigan campus farm that I used to manage.
