Hey, it’s JB!

Have you ever wanted to compost but didn’t know how, or the best way?

Composting when living in a city can be tricky…a lack of space, rats, etc.

Luckily, my colleague at Planet Detroit, Brian Allnutt, published an incredible resource of everything you need to know about composting in Detroit. The story even has a list of in-person composting events coming up, like how to compost with worms.

My take is that everyone should compost. It’s one of the most accessible ways to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste is the most common item sent to landfills where it breaks down and creates methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. But one study found that by composting and recycling, Detroit could reach net-negative waste-sector emissions by 2030.

Also, make sure to read to the bottom of today’s newsletter, I need your help with something!

On Tuesday, I posted this photo to X, formerly Twitter, of a hardware shop and sushi restaurant in Ann Arbor, and it seemed to resonate with people. It got me thinking: what are your favorite surprising/fun/useful food business combinations in Detroit? Please hit the button below and let me know!!
