BridgeDetroit Reporter Malachi Barrett was runner up for Young Journalist of the Year and the staff won 18 awards for excellence in journalism Wednesday night from the Detroit Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

BridgeDetroit founder Stephen Henderson also took home an award for health reporting with American Black Journal’s “The Black Church & Young People’s Mental Health” alongside Daphne Hughes and Christian Gibbons.
BridgeDetroit/Detroit Free Press Reporter Nushrat Rahman won third place for Collaborative Coverage for her work with the Michigan Solutions Journalism Collaborative alongside Hayley Harding, Bill Kubota, Jennifer Brookland, Cassie Chew and others for their series, “The U.S. has a maternal, infant health crisis.”
Sister publication Bridge Michigan reporters Ron French and Robin Erb were named Journalists of the Year during the annual Excellence in Journalism awards. French and Erb were honored for their extensive reporting on how Michigan counties are using money from a $745 million settlement to address the opioid epidemic.
It’s the second straight year that Bridge reporters took home top honors at the journalism awards ceremony. BridgeDetroit reporter Jena Brooker won Young Journalist of the Year in 2024. Bridge Michigan also won 8 awards.
