On the next episode, we launch a monthly series focusing on “The Black Church in Detroit,” and produced in collaboration with the Ecumenical Theological Seminary and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

We preview the PBS documentary from Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., “The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song,” which traces the 400-year history of the Black Church in America.  And, Stephen leads a roundtable with three Detroit ministers on the Black Church’s involvement in the fight for racial and social justice, from the Jim Crow era and Civil Rights Movement to today’s Black Lives Matter Movement.  Guests include Rev. Dr. Constance Simon, Fellowship Chapel, Pastor Barry Randolph, Church of the Messiah and Rev. Charles Williams II, Historic King Solomon Baptist Church.

The group also talks about how the Black church meets the needs of the community, both historically and now, during the pandemic. Don’t miss American Black Journal on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on Detroit Public TV, WTVS-Channel 56.

This week we also pay tribute to artist and icon, Mary Wilson. Watch the full episode from Detroit Black Journal with Mary Wilson along with the clip we put together below.
