Reparations: What Is Owed to Black Americans?
On “American Black Journal” this week, host Stephen Henderson revisits a portion of the show’s latest virtual town hall, hosted in conjunction with BridgeDetroit, centered around reparations and what is owed to Black Americans. Together with four esteemed panelists, Henderson examines reparations and the forms they could take here in Southeast Michigan.
Joined by civil rights activist Rev. Dr. JoAnn Watson, City of Detroit Planning Commission Chair Lauren Hood, Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus Chair Keith Williams and Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Andre Perry, Henderson moderates an emotionally-charged conversation about the need for reparations for Black descendants of slaves and survivors of discrimination.
Plus, the panels discuss the creation of a new Detroit task force to study reparations for discriminatory housing and economic practices in the city, as well as who should receive them and what form they should take.
With Special Guests:
- Rev. Dr. JoAnn Watson, Senior Pastor at West Side Unity Church & longtime supporter of reparations
- Andre Perry, Senior Fellow, Brookings Metro & Author of “Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives & Property in America’s Black Cities”
- Lauren Hood, Chair, Detroit City Planning Commission & AfroUrbanist
- Keith Williams, Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus Chairman & Consultant
