Detroit United Front Forms to Build Better Equity, Inclusion for Black Businesses
Three Detroit-based organizations leading the way for Black businesses and entrepreneurs in the city have joined forces to create Detroit United Front to connect Black businesses with resources around the city. The National Business League (NBL) Detroit Chapter, the Detroit Black Chamber of Commerce (DBCC) and the Booker T. Washington Trade Association (BTWTA) created Detroit United Front to advocate for better economic equality and inclusion for Black businesses.
“American Black Journal” host Stephen Henderson sits down with NBL CEO Ken Harris and DBCC President Danielle Benson to talk about the mission of Detroit United Front, as well as the need for education, training and capital resources. Plus, they take stock of and share their thoughts on the current state of Black businesses in Detroit.
The Scarab Club Showcases Memorial Art Exhibit for Artist, Mentor Gilda Snowden
She was known as a friend, a mentor, an artist and a Detroiter through and through, and now local artists are coming together to pay tribute to the legacy she left behind. The Scarab Club, in Detroit’s Midtown, recently unveiled its annual art exhibit and memorial to the late Detroit artist Gilda Snowden, open through April 15, 2022. The mixed-media exhibit, open to all artists, was reframed in 2015 to commemorate Snowden’s impact on Detroit’s arts community before she passed away in 2014.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, “American Black Journal” producer AJ Walker takes viewers to the Gilda Snowden Memorial Art Exhibit opening to see the works from local artists on display this year, as well as to hear first-hand anecdotes of Snowden’s community impact and cultural legacy from Gallery Director Treena Flannery-Erickson and this year’s featured artists.
Laura Rain & The Caesars Bring R&B, Soul to the Detroit Performs Stage
Viewers can enjoy a closing “Detroit Performs: Live from Marygrove” performance from Detroit artists Laura Rain & The Caesars, known for blending nostalgic Motor City soul with elements of jazz, R&B and blues.
Since 2013, Rain has released four albums and won a Detroit Music Award for “Outstanding Blues Songwriter” with frequent collaborator and producer-songwriter George Friend.
