Hey, it’s JB!

Six chefs will cook up 350 pounds of greens next week for Detroit’s annual collard green cookoff and guests will cast their vote for Best Collard Green Chef.

Last year’s winner, Buddah Calhoun, will compete to defend the title that he won with his pan fried, vegan collard greens. This time, he’s coming with a slightly different recipe and hopes to take home the win again.

At the event, I will co-host a storytelling booth with Michaela Ayers, the founder of Black Her Stories (BHS), a project and podcast that celebrates the creative power of Black women. We will interview attendees about their maternal connections to food, in alignment with the theme of this season’s podcast: the creative power of mothers and caregivers.

“I come from a family where women did most of the cooking. Everything my grandmother made was delicious. In the Black-American tradition recipes are a form of currency, and collectively, food is an expression of care,” Ayers said. “Through this storytelling booth, I’m eager to learn what our cooking practices say about where we come from and what shared memories are tied to collard greens.”

If you go to the collard green cook off, please stop by the booth and chat with us! We’re so excited to hear your stories which Ayers will craft into a podcast episode, a project she said will pay homage to the Black women who have fed her.
