FUN FACT: Detroit’s first fully licensed food truck was El Guapo, in 2011.

Hey, it’s JB!

The Detroit People’s Food Co-op is OPEN!

The Black-led cooperatively owned grocery store has been in the works for a decade-and-a-half and yesterday, it opened its doors to the public for the first time!

The store is stocked with fresh produce, bulk foods, familiar packaged products, and features 40 Detroit vendors.

Regular hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. You do not have to be a member to shop there.

But, if you do want to be a member, it’s a one-time fee of $200 and it gives you discounts and voting power to shape the future of the co-op. (They also have payment plans.)

My plug for why you should be a member: Supporting a local food system is one of the easiest ways to create a better, healthier, and more just world. And, you have to eat, so why not eat while supporting your community?

Check out some of my prior reporting on the food co-op history and grocery store access in Detroit.

Dig In,
JB
