FUN FACT: Eastern Market was originally for hay and wood sales and was located in Cadillac Square.

Hey, it’s JB!

Did you know that food is the most common item sent to the landfill? And that households are the biggest contributors to the roughly 251 million pounds of food waste in Detroit each year?

And that throwing food out costs the average American household $1,500 a year?

Once the food is sent to the landfill it creates methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times stronger than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, which contributes to climate change.

Make Food Not Waste is a Detroit-based nonprofit passionate about tackling this massive-but-easily-fixable issue. On April 13, the organization is hosting its annual free community feast in Southfield to inspire and teach households how to waste less.

Local chefs are volunteering their time to prepare the dinner using ingredients that otherwise would have been wasted. On the menu: herb-roasted turkey, vegan curry and rice pilaf and a fruit cobbler for dessert!

What item do you throw out the most? Email me at jbrooker@bridgedetroit.com. I’ll come next week with some tips.

I went for a walk by the Detroit River on Monday and saw a pheasant! Detroit is believed to be the only big city in the country with large populations of wild pheasants running around.
