The food community was rocked Monday by the death of Chef Maxcel Hardy at the age of 40.
Hardy was the owner of COOP Caribbean Fusion inside Detroit Shipping Company in the Cass Corridor as well as pizza and burger joint Jed’s Detroit on the east side. He was nationally and locally acclaimed for his culinary skills and also known for community service, including his work feeding others during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
My colleague Micah Walker interviewed community members about Hardy’s impact on Detroit’s culinary scene.
“We lost a giant in our community,” said Kai Bowman, COO of Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance.

Additionally, I wanted to let you know about the second annual manoomin (wild rice) soup cook-off that will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at Detroit’s North American Indian Association building at 22720 Plymouth.
Manoomin is the state’s official native grain and central to the story of Great Lakes Native American tribes. The wild rice has dwindled in numbers due to development, contamination, and climate change.
The event will serve as a forum to lift up the environmental dangers of nuclear energy and promote efforts to protect the land and water and pre-colonization lifeways.
