Dion Walcott said he opened Art and Belonging because he noticed Black people are often large media and economic consumers, but he didn’t see many of them in manager and executive roles.

Welcome to Porchside, BridgeDetroit’s neighborhood-based community engagement series that brings residents together in small, informal gatherings to share the questions, concerns and issues shaping life in Detroit communities. Together, with our community partners, we are creating a more responsive and transparent approach to local news.
The series is built around three core ideas: listening, reporting and community impact. We want Detroiters to see how their feedback influences the stories we pursue and the conversations sparked across the city.
Throughout the Summer and into Fall, we will be meeting people where they are at: on actual porches, in backyards and neighborhood parks. The conversations we have directly inform our reporting, helping our newsroom identify story ideas, better understand neighborhood priorities and ensure residents’ voices are reflected in our coverage.
Benches and pathways? Residents at odds over what future of Voigt Park should look like
Come fall, Voigt Park will look a little different, and not all the neighbors are happy about the changes coming.
