Detroit real estate developer Philip Kafka’s father was one of Jeffrey Epstein’s oldest childhood friends, calling the notorious sex trafficker and pedophile a role model for his son in a signed letter released Monday by Congress.
Documents released by the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform included Terry Kafka’s sexually-charged letter as part of Epstein’s 50th “birthday book,” a collection of bawdy tributes from friends compiled by longtime girlfriend and alleged accomplice Ghislane Maxwell. The 2003 letter says a 16-year-old “Phillie” was enamored with Epstein, describing him as a role model for Kafka’s son.
Philip Kafka said in a statement to BridgeDetroit that his father and Epstein were childhood friends but only talked a “handful of times” after high school. He denounced Epstein’s abuse of women.
“My father was one of, it now seems, hundreds of people who were asked to write something on his behalf. I met Epstein once and only once, when I was fifteen for about thirty minutes, asked him some questions about his career, and never talked to him again. That half-hour is the entirety of the story,” Kafka said in the statement.
“I don’t know words strong enough to encapsulate how thoroughly unconscionable I find Epstein to have been. His abuse and exploitation of young women; his disgusting lifestyle and utter lack of respect for people – he got exactly what he deserved.”
The letter disclosure adds to documentation of the Kafka family relationship with Epstein in the public record.
Terry Kafka gave a glowing character statement on Epstein’s behalf when he faced allegations of abusing underage girls in 2007, claiming, among other things, that Epstein also spent “a good amount of time” with Philip Kafka when Philip was 19 years old. Epstein was offered a non-prosecution deal by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, avoiding federal charges in exchange for registering as a sex offender and pleading guilty to soliciting minors for prostitution.
Terry vouched for Epstein in a character letter that described him as a caring friend who “spent a good amount of one-on-one time with my 19-year-old son Philip to help him sort out academic problems he was having.” The Palm Beach Post obtained the statement from the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office in Florida as part of a profile prepared by Epstein’s defense.
Kafka did not respond to additional questions about why his father was included in documents prepared by Epstein’s defense, or why his father spoke of multiple meetings between Philip and Epstein.
The birthday letter to Epstein, first reported by Samuel Robinson’s Detroit one million Substack, raises questions about the influential figures Philip Kafka’s parents surrounded him with. BridgeDetroit attempted to reach Terry Kafka by email but did not receive a response.
Philip Kafka included a column from the Dallas Morning News in his statement to BridgeDetroit, where his father described the letter as “out of character” and “embarrassing.” In the column, Terry said Maxwell encouraged him to be “raunchy” and claimed he wasn’t in regular contact with Epstein.
Details in the letter have featured prominently in multiple news stories and social media commentary about the collection of letters, largely focusing on a bizarre opening where Terry ruminates on Epstein’s conception in graphic detail. The letter reflects on Epstein’s enjoyment of the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, where Terry Kafka speculates on whether Epstein lost his virginity with Terry in the same room.
The “birthday book” has made national headlines because it also contains a cryptic poem with what has been claimed to be President Donald Trump’s signature framed in a drawing of a naked woman. Trump has denied authorship of it. Maxwell, who collected letters from Epstein’s friends, is serving a 20-year prison sentence for conspiring to sexually traffic minors.
Terry Kafka, a wealthy Texas advertising executive and Republican donor, has reportedly helped finance Philp’s early business ventures in New York City, and the two still collaborate, finishing a joint development in Fort Worth, TX last year. Since his beginnings as a New York businessman, Philip Kafka moved to Detroit full-time in 2017, bought dozens of properties, opened several restaurants and has been lauded as one of the people leading Detroit’s future.
Terry Kafka’s letter reads as an effusive account of a lifelong relationship with Epstein dating back to 1958, filled with admiration for Epstein’s charm and sexual prowess.
Documents released by Congress include a class photo with Terry from Mark Twain Junior High School in Brooklyn, which Epstein also attended, and a photo of a middle-aged Terry Kafka in his underwear with Epstein and other friends. Terry told the Morning News that the photo was a recreation of a photo taken in their youth 25 years earlier.
The letter largely reflects on their shared experiences through high school and college, with Terry writing that they drifted apart as time went on.
“You guys made me what I became today and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about you,” Terry Kafka wrote. “So Jeff, even though we don’t speak that often, and our lives don’t intersect, you really are a part of me and I will always be grateful for the great times we had. You have been and still are a great influence for me.”
The letter is labeled from “Johnny Boy Kafka” but signed as Terry and includes a letterhead with the same address registered to Terry and Janet Kafka in Texas. It contains sexually graphic descriptions of trips Terry Kafka and Epstein took together to Europe.
“You began to realize that you could get away with shit!” Terry Kafka wrote. “That chicks and people in general were schmucks! You sensed that you were sharper and more astute than most. Especially the ones who had women, money, position and power. Yes, your charisma and persuasive ways came very early on.”
It also mentions the meeting between Epstein and 16-year-old “Phillie,” who was “obviously enamoured by you and loved meeting you.”
“You don’t know it, but you’re my kid’s role model,” Terry Kafka wrote in the letter. “That’s why it’s so satisfying to recall the past with you. It has shaped both of us.”
His wife Janet Kafka, runs a marketing agency and served as the honorary Consul of Spain. BridgeDetroit left a voicemail with her cell phone seeking comment on Wednesday.

A rising Detroit developer
Philip Kafka has been praised as a creative force for “inspired” architecturally ambitious new developments and “elevated” new restaurants, and heavily criticized for the same efforts.
Philip Kafka began buying land in Detroit in 2013, starting with developing the signature Quonset huts in the Core City neighborhood. Since then, he has acquired 61 properties under several LLCs for $2 million total, according to Regrid, an online parcel map of the United States.
Today, his portfolio also includes ownership of Cafe Prince, home of the “raw, nude carrot” plus two dozen minimalist apartments, “The Caterpillar” residence, and a number of commercial units he rents to Periodicals, Lady of the House, Barda, Puma and others.
“Obviously, none of this has any bearing on my commitment to Detroit, my work, to the
businesses and residents who make Core City so special, and to creating spaces where people feel welcome, supported, and proud to be part of it,” Philip Kafka said in the statement.
In 2024 Kafka submitted a letter in support of a Core City community group looking to rezone parts of Core City to prevent heavy industry from establishing, which it was successful in doing.
Kafka has at least one more project in the works to redevelop a former railcar shop in Core City into a park, according to the Prince Concepts website. He has claimed a number of commercial property rehabilitation tax exemptions, valued at more than $1 million.
Kafka was recognized by Hour Detroit in 2020 as one of 24 Metro Detroiters shaping life in 2020. He has also received several design awards from The Architect’s Newspaper, the American Institute of Architects Michigan, and in 2022 Prince Concepts was named one of the ten most innovative architecture-focused companies in the world by Fast Company.
Also in 2020, the Detroit Land Bank Authority gave Kafka’s Prince Concepts first dibs on roughly 100 properties in the Core City neighborhood. For five years anyone who wanted to purchase one of the lots on hold had to ask Kafka for permission first.
More recently, Kafka has been embroiled in controversy, including his sudden closure of a popular Detroit bagel shop.
Last year, Kafka bought the Detroit Institute of Bagels storefront, which was leasing space in a building owned by Kafka. Several employees quit amid what they said was a “takeover” and cited Kafka’s public philosophy around developing in Detroit. Kafka fired the rest of the staff, closed the shop, and began leasing to a new Ann Arbor-based bagel business earlier this year.
In the last several years, some residents and activists have been calling for the boycott of restaurants leasing from Kafka due to his alleged political beliefs.
Philip Kafka has said he’s never had a job; Instead, he first made money by launching his billboard campaign for Prince Media Company, which his dad helped him with. On the side, Philip Kafka made billboards urging New Yorkers to move to Detroit where they could “be left alone”. Philip Kafka credits his parents with imbuing him with the tools to be a thriving entrepreneur.

We are tired of your obsession with Philip Kafka
He is a good man and landlord.
Agreed. Total witch hunt here. I hope the authors are content with never having done anything wrong in their lives and moreover, their parents being flawless too!
lmao blink twice
This article reads like AI-generated gossip. Is there any evidence the Detroit developer was directly connected to the sex offender, or is this just an attempt to damage his reputation?
It certainly seems like a plain old attempt to damage his reputation. So he met him for thirty minutes when he was a teenager, how does that say anything about him as a person? Are we now all judged by everyone we’ve ever met for 30 minutes? And look at his quote, he’s completely denouncing Epstein. It’s ridiculous that this made it to any paper, it definitely reads like an AI-generated smear article.
The article was about his dad, though.
Oh wow, stop the presses! a Detroit developer’s dad once wished his childhood friend a happy birthday… who years later turned out to be a pedophile. Truly groundbreaking journalism.
Yikes, not a good look. Personally, I wouldn’t stick up for a guy who was helping the world’s most notorious child predator stay out of prison. After Terry Kafka wrote his character statement, Epstein went on to abuse more women and children for YEARS.
Why was Terry in a photograph with Epstein well into their adult years if they were only childhood friends? They clearly hung out on at least on occasion, and in a private enough setting to be in their underwear. This is very disturbing stuff that demands more answers.
This story emphasizes how deeply intertwined personal relationships can become, especially when someone like Epstein solicits praise from so many. It’s worth examining how much we hold people accountable for third party actions, especially across generations.
Philip, you’ve done so much good for this city. Don’t let sensational stories get in the way of that. The members of your community know your real character and stand with you. Keep doing good work and pushing Detroit forward!
My dad grew up in 1960s Vegas. Praying I won’t have to answer for the sins of his high school buddies!
Philip Kafka – keep doing good work!!
There’s no place for this kind of cancel culture clickbait in Detroit. Let’s not turn our city into Hollywood drama. If we’re going to report on something, how about Detroit’s real challenges, like failing grades for ozone and particle pollution, the quality and safety of our food systems, or access to healthy meals? Those are stories that impact all of us. Let’s focus on building and BRIDGING communities, and enjoying each other in peace, instead of tearing people down.
Pathetic….
…this journalism. This hit piece. The amount of “News” in this article.
This is the sort of noise that has ruined the public’s perception of media. I hope this article makes you money, because it sure doesn’t earn you any respect.
Not sure this constitutes Detroit news. Kafka should be examined in the context of his own contributions to our community and not in the light of another person’s words.
LOL
it burns your soul that people are successful ha?
His father was a friend of him in high school, important new for Detroit apparently.
Just came to say that I am grateful for what Philip has created in Detroit. His vision for and investment in Core City is a bright spot.
what did he create?
It is clear that the story is about nothing, “a kid that once met Epstein”
And the only purpose is to make Kafka look bad.
As a resident of Detroit for over 50 years I find it concerning “we” want to find any reason possible, including back channeling sins, to discourage someone who is trying to improve Detroit.
Detroit is a better place because of Philip Kafka. Leave him alone!
I’d take this publication more seriously if it reported many of the amazing things that have happened in core city since Kafka arrived and didn’t only focus on drumming up drama. Fine, you want this to be news, that’s your prerogative, but core city has so much other great news, too. Cover it all.
This reads like a desperate attempt at character assassination by extremely loose guilt by association. It is disheartening to see how carelessly media figures play with people’s reputations. I know Philip to be a good man and he’s cultivated an incredible, welcoming community in Core City, Detroit. Would love to see an article on all of the positive work he’s done (and is doing) in the city.
“Bridge journalists use AI tools with discretion to innovate or assist with reporting.” Cool, now I know why everything you write is garbage. Stop wasting your time trying to bring good people down.
The details in this story really highlight the complexity of the situation.
y’all really tryna shame this guy cuz his daddy had a high school friend? Y’all crazy. We in Detroit got real problems we ain’t got time for this
So what exactly does any of this have to do with Philip? Or Detroit? Just stupid clickbait for extra views?
I wonder how long it will take for them to turn off comments on this post like they did with the DIB one. Everyone out here showing love making this “news” publication look bad. We got bigger problems people!
So this has nothing to do with Detroit? Got it.
Pretty strange article for a non-profit bankrolled by the Devos family.
Really nice. You guys should write for Fox news.
Detroit is a city of heart, hustle, and hope. I’ve seen Philip Kafka put sweat and care into Core City, opening restaurants, creating homes, landscaping, cleaning the streets, and pushing our city forward. Let’s not let one sensational headline overshadow the real, day-to-day improvements he’s made here. Everybody’s life is shaped by parents, history, and context, but what really counts is how we choose to show up now. If Philip’s still putting in the work to support and uplift Detroit, that’s what deserves our focus and appreciation.
This piece is trash! Knowing a person, especially a person that was a friend of your parents has literally no meaning as to what or who Philip Kafta is, or will become. This was all you could find on him? Epstein was trash but even with him many NEVER knew the totality of who he was until he was exposed…ppl keep that kind of ish private. Philip’s dad probably did not really know Epstein on that level and even if he did what does that have to do with Philip? To the writers do your friends know every weird or disgusting thing you do in your bedroom or in your home? To try to connect some disgusting behavior to Philip due to a few introductions or half hours is really reaching. I drove down Grandriver everyday when I attended Cass back in the day and for him to have a vision for a portion of Detroit and actually act on it when it was literally sitting there dying… in a community that needed an anchor is crazy and bizarre and a waste of typing. Do better! I know Philip is definitely attempting to do better by rebuilding Detroit how about focus on that and how to help him. If he has some freaky secrets so what, as long as no one is violated. This whole article just irritates my soul from a born and raised Detroiter. Like how did this helped the city in any way!
This. He has been investing in Detroit for years with no guaranteed return. That’s not just business, that’s vision. More of an artist than a businessman.
Wow really grasping at straws for content. Nothing like an article based in muckraking to try to drag down a community member undeserving of slander to prove how insignificant your journalism is. Philip Kafka is a rare individual who pours their heart into thoughtful and dedicated growth with their neighborhood. Too bad this paper isn’t worth hitting a printing press so it could be dumped in the trash where it belongs👏
As a longtime BridgeDetroit reader (& having met the owner during MPLP), I value your reporting—but the Philip Kafka/Epstein coverage needs perspective.
Philip met Epstein once as a teen for 30 minutes & has consistently condemned his horrific crimes. The letters reflect his father’s poor judgment—not Philip’s actions or values.
His work in Detroit—redeveloping Core City, supporting local businesses & advocating for thoughtful zoning—speaks for itself. Tying it to Epstein’s disgusting crimes is guilt by association & distracts from real conversations about the city’s growth & equity.
Please do better.
If you know Philip, (which we get it, you don’t) you know he has built and supported this community with INSANE creative vision & heart, and continues to work his butt off to bring opportunity to Detroit. Instead of cranking out trash sensationalized pieces, maybe give the guy a hug for having to spend a few minutes with a gross psychopath when he was a kid. AND WHAT A WEIRD PIECE TO WRITE ABOUT ‘DETROIT’.
Jeffrey Epstein prolifically helped his friends children start businesses, get into colleges they didn’t deserve to go to, and we all know he gave large amounts of money to people for their silence. This was his dad’s life long best friend. He’s on the MAN OF FASHION SUGAR TRAIN and it’s pretty obvious LOL.
