Neisha Lee prepares to straighten the hair of Terri Motley, 51. Lee stayed in the same shelter when she was a child and considers it her duty to give back to the community that helped her family. Valaurian Waller for Bridge Detroit

Hey BridgeDetroit readers! 👋

Meet Niesha Lee. She’s the creator of Inspiring Hair, a mobile salon providing free services for people experiencing homelessness.

In June, we spent an afternoon with Lee at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries Genesis House II shelter to catch a glimpse of her in action. In the basement of the family shelter on Detroit’s west side, she turned the space into a makeshift salon where she pampered shelter residents, combing and straightening hair, arching eyebrows and applying lashes.

For Lee, the work is personal.

She’s one of BridgeDetroit’s Resilience in the D honorees. The five-part series commemorates our newsroom’s fifth anniversary and recognizes Detroiters who have made a difference.

Read Lee’s story and follow along to learn about other unsung heroes in Detroit.
