Here is what to know:
What tax breaks could be available for Detroiters?
Residents may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) if they file their taxes.
The EITC is meant for low-to-moderate income workers and families. There are two EITC credits, one when someone files their federal tax return and another credit when they file their state of Michigan tax return, according to a new release. Adults and children must have a social security number to apply. A married couple filing jointly, with three kids, who have a total income of $66,819 or less could get up to $10,179 in the federal and state Earned Income Tax Credit.
For eligible families, the CTC offers up to $2,000 per child, under 17 years old. Claimants must have earned at least $2,500 from working in 2024, the children must have a valid social security number, according to a news release. Primary caregivers may also be eligible.
For the 2023 tax year, Detroiters claimed more than $450 million in the EITC refunds and millions in the Child Tax Credits.

How to get help?
Residents earning below $67,000 qualify for a free tax preparation appointment. The Accounting Aid Society and Wayne Metro will provide in person services, alongside drop in and virtual slots.
“Our goal is to help families get the most out of their tax returns and put that money back into the household budget,” said Louis D. Piszker, Wayne Metro Chief Executive Officer, in the news release. “It’s so important to work with a certified preparer to maximize tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, home heating credit, and dependent care. During tax appointments we can also address property taxes, water, and energy assistance, along with financial counseling, debt reduction, and credit repair.”
To schedule an appointment, go to www.getthetaxfacts.org or call the United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline.
