Michigan’s home heating credit deadline is Sept. 30. Here’s how to claim it.

The deadline to claim Michigan’s home heating credit is Wednesday, Sept. 30. 

The credit is meant to help income-eligible homeowners and renters pay heating expenses. Certain groups – seniors, veterans and people with disabilities – who receive more than $20 in heating credits may also qualify for additional food assistance benefits. 

Last year, the average eligible household received $171, often applied directly to utility bills, according to a news release.

Who qualifies? 

To qualify, claimants must be owners or renters and meet income requirements detailed online at bit.ly/MichiganHomeHeatingCredit. For instance, the income ceiling for one person is $17,243 and for a six-person household, the cap is $47,471.  Full time students, claimed as a dependent, and those who live on a campus or licensed care facility do not qualify. 

How to file a claim 

Michiganders can file home heating credit claims online or via mail. For detailed information, go to bit.ly/MichiganHomeHeatingCredit. Applications for the home heating credit (form MI-1040CR-7) are available at local libraries, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offices, community agencies and the Michigan Department of Treasury.
