Michiganders in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have more time to apply for replacement benefits if their food spoiled during recent storms and power outages in Wayne County.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) said households have until Wednesday, Sept. 23 to request the additional SNAP benefits. Storms rocked southeast Michigan earlier this month, leaving tens of thousands without power. Officials confirmed a tornado hit Detroit’s east side.
“Michigan families should know they may have an option to recover some of the food assistance they lost during the extended power outage in Wayne County. If you receive SNAP benefits and lost food, we encourage you to report the loss by Sept. 23,” Amy Epkey, MDHHS acting director, said in a news release.
SNAP recipients usually have to report food loss because of a power outage or other event that qualifies for reimbursement within 10 days. But the severity of the storms prompted the department to seek a federal extension allowing more time to apply for replacement benefits.
How much can households receive?
According to MDHHS, the amount is based on the total value of the food that was lost and capped at the maximum amount of regular benefits in one month.
How to request replacement SNAP benefits?
SNAP recipients whose food spoiled can call 844-464-3447 or go to the MDHHS website, at https://bit.ly/MDHHSForms, to fill out the requirement form titled “Food Replacement Affidavit – Manual – DHS-601.” The deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 23.
