Wayne County homeowners can learn about ways to protect themselves from mortgage and deed fraud.
Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell is holding a town hall on Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Greater Burnette Baptist Church located at 16801 Schoolcraft Road in Detroit. Wayne County Register of Deeds Bernard Youngblood is also expected to speak at the event.
“Mortgage and deed fraud is a continuing issue in Wayne County and, as we are seeing, it has become a major issue in other areas of the country as well,” Chair Bell said in a Wednesday news release.
Mortgage loan fraud is a growing problem, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Deed fraud happens when someone impersonates another person, forging their signature and transferring interest in real estate, and mortgage fraud is when a person gets money from a mortgage company by mispresenting facts, such as a fraudulent deed, when applying for a mortgage, according to Wayne County’s Mortgage and Deed Fraud Unit.
